Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ — Today, adidas has introduced the world’s first intelligent basketball shoe. The shoe, called adidas_1 Basketball, features the award-winning technology that is revolutionizing the sporting goods industry.

The shoe provides intelligent cushioning, meaning it finds the right level of cushioning whatever the players’ size or movement. It senses an athlete’s needs, understands those needs, and instantly adapts itself to be perfect for the player.

The adidas_1 Basketball shoe works on the same principles as the adidas_1 Running shoe. A magnetic sensor in the heel senses the level of compression. This compression level is sent to the shoe’s brain, a microprocessor that understands if the cushioning level is too soft or too firm. And a motor-driven cable system adapts the cushioning, to make the shoe softer or firmer as needed. The basketball model has been uploaded with new software along with changed physical characteristics to meet the needs of the sport.

Besides the normal differences between running and basketball shoes in outsole and upper materials, the components of the intelligent system are changed to meet the specific needs of the sport. They remain positioned in the heel and midfoot of the shoe. This is because while many players land, cut and plant with their toes, the forces generated when the heel contacts the floor cause some of the greatest overcompression. The basketball cushioning element and midsole have a lower profile than the running model, and the layout of the motor cable unit and processor is streamlined to fit the space. The shoe recognizes different kinds of compression associated with basketball, such as: even, regular compressions for running; quick, extreme compressions for jumping and landing; and longer, extreme compressions for cutting. It filters all the data and develops a player profile, meaning it knows if you are a player who does more running and cutting, or a player that does more jumping and landing. Once it recognizes your style, it adjusts more quickly when you go from running to cutting, or from jumping to running. Adjustments happen every eight steps.

Using the adidas_1 Basketball shoe is simple: Just switch it on and play. The shoe accounts for all stoppage in play to conserve battery life. If the heel experiences no compression for five minutes, the shoe goes to “standby mode”. One of the lights on the shoe blinks to let you know the shoe is resting, but not off. It keeps checking for activity, and, if the heel compresses again, it wakes up and goes back into play mode. If there is no compression after two hours, it moves to a softer setting and switches itself off, or “chill mode”. When switched on, it gets firmer to protect against extreme movements.

The shoe will be available in limited quantities in the U.S. in May, with a global introduction in August, 2006. It retails for $250 and will be sold through adidas Sports Performance store and selected retailers.

What about aftermarket oil additives- engine treatments, won’t they make any motor oil perform better?

Engine treatments are unnecessary & can potentially be detrimental to the chemistry of your motor oil. The Federal Trade Commission has issued charges of false & deceptive advertising that several aftermarket oil additive manufacturers have misled consumers into believing that their products offer increased engine protection & performance when added to motoroil.

Without going into extensive detail here’s what you need to know about aftermarket oil additives: There are basically two types of additives used, either Teflon based with PTFE or Chlorinated based with some type of carrier, usually a paraffin based carrier or other mineral oil. Some have extremely large amounts of moly, zinc or phosphorus, all extreme pressure agents which can be detrimental to a motor oils proper function in the amount that they use.

Teflon does absolutely nothing inside an engine. Teflon must be heated up to about 800 deg. F to get it to stick to anything for friction reducing purposes, just like the Teflon on a frying pan, yet in an engine suspended microscopic colloidal Teflon particles can potentially gradually attach to the oil pick-up screen & reduce oil flow to critical components as well as reducing the oil flow in other critical internal engine passages by attaching themselves to the passageway walls. In addition, as the oil filter filters out some of the Teflon particles, the filter flow rate can potentially be reduced which in turn may eventually become restricted & default to the by-pass mode of operation, which means unfiltered will then flow through the engine.

If you’ve ever gotten bleach on your fingers you will notice how slippery it is. Add enough Chlorinated components to a mineral based carrier & mix it with some type of teflon, moly, zinc or phosphorus & you can reduce friction, except for one concern: chlorinated additives mixed with oil & subjected to heat forms hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is detrimental to internal engine components.

The truth is: When using a properly formulated motor oil you do not need any aftermarket additives whatsoever & additionally, the additives you may put in can potentially be incompatible with the additives the oil company carefully blended in. The major oil & additive companies are some of the richest & most powerful companies in the world, & they certainly can afford to hire the top chemists that know how to properly formulate a motor oil (this is not to say they make a premium quality motor oil; just that they know how to properly formulate one to perform the functions it was designed to & meet the required specifications, but they won’t because it would cut into their profit!).

AMSOIL manufactured the first oil made for extended drain intervals to 25,000 miles or one year in 1972. The technology was available over thirty years ago! The other oil companies were recommending 2,000 to 3,000 mile drains back then. They still haven’t come that far in 32 years, have they?

Today, AMSOIL still has their 25,000 mile/1-year oil, and has now formulated a 35,000 mile/1-year oil or no oil changes with by-pass filtration & oil analysis testing. The other oil companies don’t have anything that even comes close to what AMSOIL offers!

Mobil does not recommend or guarantee 25,000 mile/1-year drain intervals like AMSOIL 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40 or 35,000 mile/1-year drain intervals like AMSOIL 0W-30 Severe Service Synthetic does & that is a fact. No-where on the Mobil bottle does it state 25,000 miles/1-year or 35,000 miles/1-year, AMSOIL does.

Mobil-1 Supersyn 0W-30 allows for a 1.842 mm wear scar compared to the AMSOIL Series 0W-30 Severe Service which only allows for a 0.374 mm wear scar. That means, Mobil-1 0W-30 allows for 5 times the wear that AMSOIL 0W-30 does!

Mobil 1 has run the tag line for their advertising stating “nothing outperforms Mobil 1″. Mobil makes a good oil, but were here to show you that it does not outperform AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils. They can come out with all the catchy advertising buzz words to market their oils, but in the final analysis, buzz words don’t add one thing to their product’s performance.
